I’m coming to a class. (Yay!) Where are you located and how do I get there?
We are located at Ponce City Market, 675 Ponce de Leon, Atlanta, GA 30308. We are upstairs, next door to Root Baking Company, on the opposite side of Citizen Supply.
Where do I park? Ponce City Market has paid on site parking. Click here for detailed parking information, including rates.
Do I have to pay for parking? If you park at the Ponce City Market lot, yes (employees do too so we can’t get out of parking fees either!) There is also free parking on surrounding streets though we can't guarantee there will be spaces on nearby streets. Please arrive early allowing enough time to park. 0-30 minute = $1, each additional 30 minutes is $1, 4-8 hours = $10, 8-24 hours = $15. You can either pay at one of the many kiosks on site or download the Park Mobile app and choose zone 222 (Ponce City Market) to pay. You will need to enter your tag number so take a pic of it or write it down before you head to a kiosk to pay!
I want to learn to sew, where do I start?
The best bet for a complete beginner is any of our Beginner Sewing classes. Designed for those who’ve never seen a sewing machine before or anyone who needs a refresher from their school days--this is the perfect introduction to sewing!
I can already sew, but I want to start making my own clothes. What’s the best option for me?
We have a capsule wardrobe series designed specifically for people who want to learn to sew clothes! This series begins with a wardrobe consultation and includes making 4 core garments--a pullover top, a knit tee, a dress and a pair of pants. This course is open to men as well (with alternate patterns). Each course in the series is designed to help you build skills to become a confident garment sewer. While it does include a learn to sew session, if you already know how to sew, you can consider that time to refresh and get to know our sewing machines.
If you are not ready to take on the entire series, our essential shirt class is a great primer for learning to sew and beginning to sew clothes. Another good option for those who already know how to sew is our intro to Dressmaking course. It’s perfect for anyone who can use a sewing machine, has worked a bit with patterns and is ready to take the plunge into making clothes. In this class you’ll have the option of creating one of three awesome dress patterns. However, if you find that you aren’t much of a dress person, feel free to sign up for any one of our other rotating Advanced Beginner Classes!
What level am I?
You can find an explanation of our levels here, just below our class policies. If you’re still not quite sure where you fall, send us an email and we’ll help you to work it out. These levels are general guidelines.
How do I book a place in class?
You can book your classes online. When signing up online, once you have selected a class you wish to book, select the date and time that works best for you, check the box “By signing up for this class, you agree to the class policies” and then select “Add to Cart”. Once you have added all of the classes/ products you wish to your cart, select the checkout option and finish filling in all required information.
I’m size 18 or above and I want to book a course. Why do I have to email in advance?
Don’t worry, this isn’t anything bad or scary! Just like ready-to-wear clothing, our Indie Patterns vary in their sizing standards and not all of them grade their patterns above or below a specific set of sizes. We ask anyone above a size 18 to email us before the class so we have a chance to select the best patterns for you!
How many people will there be in my class?
The maximum number of people in any class is 8 but generally 6 max.
Do I need to bring my own machine?
No, we provide all the sewing machines. We use Janome MOD-30 machines here, which are computerized and great for all levels. If you wish to bring your own machine to class so that you can learn on it and become more comfortable using your machine, you’re more than welcome to bring it along! Bring your machine’s instruction manual as well if you have it.
Is a sewing pattern included with my class?
A sewing pattern is included in almost every class. The description of your class will indicate if your pattern is included. We will mail you your pattern two weeks prior to class. For all classes other than beginner classes, to save time and space in class, we ask that students cut their pattern and fabric out at home.
Do you sell sewing machines?
No, not at this time.
Is there a sewing machine you would recommend?
We use Janome Mod 30 computerized machines, which are great, especially for beginners because they have speed control. It retails for $190-280 (depending on where you purchase it.) Another good starter machine is Brother XM2701 Lightweight, which retails for about $100.
Do you service machines? No, we don’t. We have ours serviced at Atlanta Sewing Machine company on Metropolitan Hwy.
Can you recommend someone to sharpen scissors?
Fine fabrics on Dawson Blvd in Norcross sharpens scissors.
Something has come up and I can’t make the class. What do I do?
We do not offer a refund on classes. You must give 3 full days notice if you need to cancel your space in class. You will forfeit your payment completely if giving less than 3 full days notice (72 hours to be specific!) If you do cancel your space in class with 3 days notice, you will receive a store credit in the form of a gift card that can be used for a future class or merchandise.
I’m coming to a class but I’m running late. Help!
We expect all students to be on time for class. We schedule enough time appropriate to teach and sew a particular project and one person’s tardiness can throw off the entire class! If you are running late, please call the shop: 404-228-7243. If you are running more than 15 minutes late to class, you won't be able to join the class. That may sound a bit harsh, but it would be unfair to others to stop class and start at the beginning or allow others to lag behind and wait due to tardiness. We hope you understand!
Who are your instructors? You can read our instructor bios here.
I want to buy a gift card for someone. Do you offer them?
We do offer gift cards! These can be purchased online here or in-store for a customizable amount. They can be used to pay for (or towards) all of our classes, our online/ in-store fabric shop, and on any notions!
I would like to learn how to…?
If you really want to learn something, but we don’t offer it at the moment we offer Private Lessons.
I want to come to a sip-n-sew, is that a good time to get help with my project? Sip-n-sew nights are designed to be self-guided social sewing time without instruction. If you need help with your project, please schedule a private lesson.
I’d love to have a private sewing party, can I book fun a class for a group? Yes, email us and we can put together a great sewing party for you!
I love so many of your patterns and fabrics! I don’t want to learn to sew but would love to have something custom made for me, can you do that? Yes, we’d be happy to! Email or stop in to let us know what you’re looking for.
Do you do alterations? No, we don’t. We recommend Morning Star Atelier in Decatur for alterations.
Do you teach kids sewing classes? We have found that children are best suited with one on one attention or or in very small groups. We are happy to schedule a private lesson for children 12+ years old, or for mother + child or father + child private lesson, or for a small group of children (4 kids or under with one instructor).
I’m a quilter, do you think you’ll offer quilting supplies or classes? We have some quilting cottons but not quilting supplies and we don’t teach quilting classes. There’s a great quilt shop in Decatur that does, Intown Quilters.
I’m a knitter, do you think you’ll offer knitting supplies or classes? No, but there’s a great shop in town called The Craftivist for all things knitting.
